What to study in Australia

School Education

School education is similar across all of Australia with only minor variations between states and territories. School education (primary and secondary) is compulsory between the ages of six and sixteen (Year 1 to Year 9 or 10). Senior secondary school runs for two years, Years 11 and 12.

Degree Studies

Higher education courses can be taken to earn an advanced degree and continue your studies in Australia. There are three main types of higher education which lead to Bachelor, Master and Doctoral Degrees.

Bridging/Foundation Courses

Foundation or bridging courses offer a stepping stone, ensuring that international students can hit the ground running when they start their degree.

Vocational Education

Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) is based on partnership between governments and industry. VET qualifications are provided by government institutions, called Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions, as well as private institutions.

English Language

ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) applies to foreigners studying in Australia on student visas. Students come from overseas to study the English language for a variety of reasons. Some need to improve their English for work or career purposes, some have a personal interest in becoming fluent in English, and some intend to travel. Others may want to continue their education in English, either in Australia or elsewhere, and need to develop the language skills to undertake further study.
